We’ve reached Chapter 19 of 'Tojima Tanzaburo Wants to Be a Kamen Rider'—the story of a man whose obsession with becoming a 'Masked Rider' knows no bounds!
In the previous chapter, we followed a Yakuza boss being hunted by Shocker combatants (those classic 'Geeke' minions). After his three loyal underlings sacrificed themselves to let him escape, he was rescued by none other than Tojima-san. Following that defeat, the Boss, desperate to grow strong enough to fight back against Shocker, was led by Tojima to meet Ichiyo Shimamura—our resident 'V3.'
What will their mountain training look like? Just how 'chuunibyou' will it get, and what interesting trivia is tucked away in this chapter? Let’s dive in and find out!
The chapter opens with a clash between Tojima-san and Ichiyo, who is furious at Tojima for retreating from the Bat Mutant. We mustn't forget that Ichiyo is more 'chuunibyou' about Kamen Rider than anyone else; he embodies Kamen Rider V3 at all times—whether he's eating, sleeping, or even in the bathroom, he is V3 every single second.
It’s no surprise, then, that he would berate Tojima for running away. Even Tojima himself felt disheartened and shaken by his own retreat in the previous encounter. However, once they cleared the air, Tojima reminded him that a Kamen Rider never fights alone. Just as Kamen Rider V3 fought alongside Riders 1 and 2, there are some foes that one person simply cannot overcome. But by joining forces and working together, they can prevail through anything
Next, we witness the intense training between Tojima-san and Ichiyo. The Yakuza boss serves as a surrogate for the audience—someone who initially looked down on them as nothing more than 'Kamen Rider geeks' or 'chuunibyou' fanatics. However, this chapter reveals a level of dedication that goes far beyond mere fandom. It isn’t just about liking Kamen Rider; it’s a profound love and a soul-deep desire to actually become the heroes they admire.
They train with life-or-death intensity. Take their tree-punching practice, for example: if a normal person tried that, they’d be in agonizing pain. But these two do it effortlessly. This implies they’ve repeated the drill so many times that their knuckles have thickened and hardened, allowing them to unleash a barrage of strikes without flinching. It’s a powerful statement to the audience about just how serious they are
Now, here’s a bit of trivia regarding Kamen Rider V3 Episode 2. For those who aren’t aware, Shiro Kazami (V3) lost his parents to the evil organization Shocker. Driven by a thirst for vengeance, he pleaded with Kamen Riders 1 and 2 to perform a reconstructive surgery on him, turning him into a cyborg. Shortly after gaining his powers and receiving brief guidance from his seniors, Riders 1 and 2 seemingly sacrificed their lives to save him.
At the time, anyone watching would have thought they were goners. Of course, as long as characters remain popular, they never truly 'die' for good! However, writing Riders 1 and 2 out of the story temporarily was a deliberate narrative choice to let V3 shine and grow on his own. Ultimately, having the seniors return to aid their junior became a long-standing tradition in the Kamen Rider series that continues to this very day.
Meanwhile, we cut to Mitsuba and Yukaris, who are hot on the trail of the Bat Mutant, trying to uncover its latest scheme. Their investigation leads them to a massive upcoming idol event. It’s not hard to connect the dots: the Bat Mutant likely plans to use the huge crowd as a means to mass-produce more Shocker combatants (Geeke minions).
What exactly is the enemy planning for this idol festival? We’ll just have to wait and see what happens in the next chapter!"
